Drop Tanks 1:72 US 110 gal, a Pair

The set holds two pieces of the American jettisonable drop tank of 110 gallons in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit of an aircraft but an armament, or rather an external stores, accessory; the tanks are hung under the wings or the fuselage of a model that is already built. The manufacturer is Brengun.

What it changes on a model

Drop tanks change the silhouette of an aircraft more than one would expect. A machine with a pair of stores looks like an aircraft on a long-range transit or an escort mission; without them, like a fighter on a short sortie. Factory tanks in plastic kits tend to be divided into two halves, and the parting line runs exactly across the most visible place, the smooth flank of the teardrop body. A separate set gets around that.

Building and painting tips

Separate the parts from the casting block with a saw or a sharp scalpel, not with nippers; on smooth bodies every nick shows once the paint is on. Sand the surface left by the cut down with fine paper and go over it with a polisher, so that it stays smooth. Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent before gluing, because of the remains of the mold release agent. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). When hanging them, help yourself with a ruler and a look from the front; two tanks hung asymmetrically or at slightly different angles catch the eye at once. Seal the base with primer, as smooth areas reveal every irregularity.
