A plastic kit of a modern American armored off-road vehicle in 1:72 scale. The real subject is the armored variant of the HMMWV designated M1114, completed with the additional side protection of Frag Kit 5 and with the armored GPK gunner's turret on the roof. In a small scale this is a rewarding companion to models of present-day hardware, because the vehicle takes up a minimum of room in a display case and still completes a scene well.
The HMMWV is a four-wheeled utility vehicle with high mobility over rough ground, which the US Army introduced in the 1980s as a general-purpose carrier for cargo, signals equipment and weapon stations. The M1114 variant is armored from the ground up: it has a reinforced cab, armored glass and a strengthened chassis. The Frag Kit 5 set represents additional protection for the sides of the vehicle against the effects of a blast and against flying fragments, and it was fitted to machines already in service. The abbreviation GPK denotes the armored turret that protects the crew member on the weapon from the sides and from behind.
The parts in 1:72 scale are small, so tweezers, a sharp scalpel and a thin plastic cement applied with a brush all pay off. Assemble the chassis and the axles and let them cure thoroughly before you stand the model on its wheels, otherwise it easily splays outward. Apply a thin primer before painting, and only then the base shade with an airbrush. The armor panels and the turret are rewarding for lightening the edges with a dry brush and for dust and mud effects on the lower part of the body and in the wheel arches. Mask the cab glazing before spraying; in so small a scale overspray on the glass shows badly.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
