The 1:72 WWI British tankers figures belong to the very beginning of armored warfare. British tanks appeared on the battlefield for the first time in 1916 and their crews worked in conditions that have no equivalent in later periods.
The inside of the machines of the time was unprotected against heat, exhaust fumes and vibration, and the crew spent hours in it without being able to straighten up. Against splinters of armor flying off from hits, leather masks with eye protection were used, which look almost fantastical today but were a purely practical aid. The commitment at Cambrai in 1917 and a year later at Amiens showed that armored machines could break a trench front and thus opened the whole later era of tank warfare.
The key is dirt. The crew's overalls were soaked with oil and grease, so they suit darker, slightly glossy areas on the knees, the forearms and at the waist. Keep the leather elements in a brown tone with uneven sheen so that they look worn. Faces darkened by soot and fatigue read better than clean skin. If you are building a scene with a tank, match the shade of mud on the figures' boots and on the running gear of the machine.
Mix the mud for the figures and for the machine from a single batch; the scene will gain a believable unity from it.
