A plastic kit from the Japanese manufacturer Hasegawa in 1:72 scale. The real subject is the Walker Machine Xabungle, the title machine of an animated robot series of the 1980s, and in the heavy armament version, as the name of the set specifies. Hasegawa also makes other machines and ships from the same setting, so the model can be placed in a wider collection.
In the world of the series, Walker Machines are two-legged machines originally intended for work in the harsh environment of a desert planet, but commonly used in combat as well. Hence their characteristic look: a sturdy lower structure with large joints, a glazed cabin set low above the legs and armament mounted on the outside, as though someone had added it himself. It is exactly this rawness that sets Xabungle apart from the sleek robots of later series and makes it a rewarding object to paint.
The large flat surfaces of the hull deserve a primer, because every shortcoming in the sanding shows up on them. Finish and align the joints before you close them up, and when assembling make sure the machine stands evenly on both legs. Glaze the cabin last and mask the clear parts before spraying. The model takes a strong patina: a dusty cast on the lower parts and rubbed-through edges suit the real subject better than perfectly clean paint.
