An injection-molded plastic kit of the German battleship Gneisenau in 1:1200 scale from the German manufacturer Revell. The set comes in the Model Set edition: alongside the sprues with the parts, the decals and the instructions the manufacturer also adds the basic paints, a brush and cement for polystyrene. The 1:1200 scale is a collector's one, so the model stays small and fits into a display case next to other ships.
Gneisenau was the sister ship of Scharnhorst. Both were built in the second half of the 1930s and carried their main armament in triple gun turrets with 28 cm guns. The German navy listed them as battleships; in foreign literature the designation battlecruiser is also used for them because of the caliber of the main armament. As a pair they made a raid into the Atlantic against Allied convoys in 1941 and in February 1942 the famous break through the English Channel. After heavy damage from bombing Gneisenau never returned to combat service.
In this scale the parts are small, so paint them while they are still on the sprue and cut them off only before cementing. Spray the main areas from an airbrush in thin coats; a brush would leave marks. Set the decks apart in a warmer shade against the gray superstructure, otherwise the model will merge into a single color. Fine details come out after a light wash into the recesses. The finished hull sits well in a base that stands for the surface; on a model this small, plaster or filler painted blue is enough.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. In the Model Set edition the basic paints, a brush and glue are included in the package; other accessories are not.
