A masking set for a model of the CH-54A Tarhe helicopter in 1:35 scale. The masks are pre-cut to the shape of the glazing, so they are simply lifted off the backing, stuck onto the clear part and removed after spraying. That saves the most tedious masking on the whole model — cutting tape by hand along the frames, where one slip of the blade shows only after unmasking.
The set is an accessory, not a kit. The plastic model is sold separately. Check the extent of the masks beyond the glazing on the packaging.
The Sikorsky CH-54A Tarhe is an American heavy helicopter of the flying crane concept. The fuselage between the cabin and the tail is narrowed to a beam, and the load is carried slung beneath it or in a container between the tall landing gear legs. The cabin is glazed over a large area, including the lower panes, and it has a station for a crew member facing aft who watches the loading directly below him. The number of flat panes and frames makes this machine an ideal candidate for a ready-made mask.
Wash the clear part and let it dry thoroughly so that the mask holds. Lift the individual masks with tweezers, lay them on and press the edges down with a toothpick — it is at the edge that the paint most often runs under. Spray the paint in thin coats; one heavy coat creates a step at the edge. It pays to spray the frames with interior color first and then with the outside color, so that the transition between them is not visible. Take the mask off shortly after it dries, not days later, and correct any run-under with the tip of a toothpick or a stick.
The mask is an accessory for a model. The plastic model, paints and thinner are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
