About product

Winding up the flywheel: a tanker in 1:35

Cranking up, in the name, refers to starting the engine by hand with a crank, and that is exactly how the figure from Royal Model is conceived. It is a scene that rarely reaches a diorama, and yet it says a great deal about both the vehicle and the crew. The 1:35 size matches ordinary kits of tanks and carriers.

Starting the engine with a crank

German armored vehicles had, alongside an electric starter, a backup inertia starter that was wound up with a crank inserted into the hull from the rear. A man leaned into the crank and spun the heavy flywheel up to high revolutions, whereupon the movement was transferred by a clutch to the engine's crankshaft. In a frost, when the batteries lost capacity and thickened oil resisted, this was often the only method that worked, and two men often leaned into the crank together. That is exactly why it was used mainly on winter mornings on the Eastern Front.

Installation and painting

The figure only makes sense at a particular place at the rear of a vehicle, so first try the position on the finished model and only then fine-tune the turn of the legs. The forward lean of the torso calls for firm contact with the base, otherwise the figure will topple. The clothing benefits from a greasy shade on the sleeves and the knees.

Who the figure is intended for

  • modelers looking for an unusual subject
  • for a scene with a tank ready to move out
  • collectors of figures in working poses
  • for filling the rear of a vehicle, which tends to be empty

It is supplied unassembled and without a color finish. Glue, paints and a base have to be obtained separately, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A crank spun a heavy flywheel up and its energy was then transferred by a clutch to the crankshaft. It was a backup method for when the battery failed.

German armored vehicles with a crank opening at the rear. It pays to check whether the kit in question has this detail.

Whether it is part of the delivery is not stated here. Some modelers make one themselves from wire and tubing.
