An injection-molded plastic kit of the Russian attack helicopter Kamov Ka-52 Alligator (NATO code name Hokum-B) in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter. The box contains more than 410 parts, photo-etched parts, a resin nose insert, rubber tires for the landing gear, a masking film and decals for two marking options. The kit offers an openable nose cover with the radar dish inside, an openable cockpit canopy and seats detailed down to their harnesses. 1:35 is an unusually large scale for a helicopter: the finished model spans over 42 cm and is over 40 cm long, so expect it to ask for plenty of room in a display case. At the same time it is a fine opportunity to bring out the interior and the stores detail in full.
The Ka-52 is a two-seat development of the Ka-50 helicopter and belongs to the Kamov school of design, which you recognize at first glance: it has two main rotors one above the other, turning in opposite directions (a coaxial arrangement). The counter-rotating rotors cancel each other out, so the machine needs no tail rotor for torque compensation, which is a fundamental difference from the vast majority of attack helicopters. Two further peculiarities: the crew sits side by side (a tandem arrangement one behind the other is more common) and the machine is fitted with ejection seats, which is utterly exceptional on a helicopter, as the rotor blades are blown off before ejection. The Ka-52 serves as a reconnaissance and attack machine with armament on pylons and a cannon on the side of the fuselage.
Given the number of parts and the amount of detail, the kit is rather for more experienced modelers. The stub wings (pylons) are glued from two halves, so it is worth reinforcing them with wire and watching that they sit symmetrically. Finish and paint the cockpit interior and the open nose before you close the fuselage; leaving the nose cover open shows the radar and gives the build a story to tell. Glue with liquid plastic cement and the photo-etched parts with super glue. Apply a primer before painting. Russian camouflage comes out well with an airbrush and soft transitions; the final weathering — dust on the landing gear, smoke streaks by the exhausts and wear on the leading edges of the blades — gives the model scale and credibility.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
