A small detail set in 1:35 scale with license plates for Israeli M113 armored personnel carriers, for which the nickname Zelda became established. It is not a model and not a kit: it is a small accessory that replaces flat engraving or a decal on a model with a real plate that has a thickness and an edge of its own. That is exactly what shows on a plate: a decal follows the shape of the surface, while a separate part stands on it and casts a shadow.
On military vehicles, license plates are among the elements that play an unexpectedly important role at model scale: they give a machine specificity and break up the uniform surface of the front and rear faces. On Israeli M113 carriers they are placed in clearly visible positions, so on a model they are not lost. The real plates tend to be scuffed, bent and dusty from service, because they sit in exposed places on the vehicle.
Legibility is what decides. Paint the plate with a base color, let it dry thoroughly and only then apply a dark wash; on a small part with fine relief it easily happens that the wash runs everywhere and the surface goes gray. Wipe the excess away with a cloth moistened in the thinner appropriate to the paint used, in one direction. Bring out the lettering and numerals by contrast rather than with a heavy layer: white paint applied flat and then carefully wiped back off the surface looks better than a thick deposit. Finally unify the whole part with matte varnish so that the plate does not stand out from the surrounding matte surface of the vehicle by its sheen, and pick out only the edges lightly in worn metal. It is glued with a minimum of cyanoacrylate glue, as the part is thin and any excess would run out at the sides.
The set is an accessory to a model, not a standalone kit. It is supplied unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package.
