An extensive injection-molded plastic set in 1:35 scale from ICM that reconstructs an American field base from the Vietnam War. Its core is the heavy transport helicopter CH-54A Tarhe, to which belong the large M-121 bomb, M8A1 steel airfield matting and figures of the crew and the ground personnel. It is a combined set for building a whole diorama, not just the helicopter on its own.
The Phu Bai base in central Vietnam was established in 1963 and during the war served the US Army and the Marine Corps; its landing area was built from M8A1 steel matting. The Sikorsky CH-54A Tarhe helicopter, nicknamed the flying crane, was used above all to carry heavy loads and occasionally to drop the massive M-121 bombs, which were used to create landing areas in the jungle.
Plan the work in sections: first the helicopter and its interior, then the airfield matting as the base of the diorama and finally the figures. Bond the plastic with thin liquid cement. For a faithful Vietnam look, washes and pigments for dust and mud effects work well; the steel matting comes alive with chipped paint and rust. Paint the figures separately and set them in place only once the scene is assembled.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
