A turned metal gun barrel from the Polish manufacturer Aber in 1:35 scale replaces the plastic barrel part of the Soviet T-54 and T-55 medium tanks. The machined metal part has no mold seam, has the correct circular section and a drilled-out muzzle, so the laborious sanding and filling of a plastic barrel is avoided. The set is an accessory for a kit and does not contain the vehicle model. The set is intended for Takom kits.
The T-54 and the T-55 that followed it are among the most widely built tanks in history; they were made in the Soviet Union and under license, and they served in dozens of armies around the world. The characteristic hemispherical turret and low silhouette became the hallmark of the postwar Soviet school of design. The main armament was the rifled 100 mm D-10T gun, which was derived from a naval gun and, in modernized forms, stayed in service for many decades.
The turned barrel is fitted in place of the plastic part, which usually has to be cut off, with the hole in the mantlet or the shield carefully opened out with a round file. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue or two-part epoxy, and with heavier parts it is worth reinforcing the joint. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and apply a primer, otherwise the paint will not hold well. We recommend blackening the muzzle of the barrel and lightly flattening the inside; the outer surface will take light drybrushing with a metallic pigment and wear around the muzzle.
This is a detail set, not a vehicle model. The base kit, glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
