The Sikorsky S-64 is a heavy helicopter built as a flying crane. It has no cargo bay: the fuselage narrows to a beam under which the load is slung, and tall fixed landing gear lets it taxi over the load and lift it from below. The cockpit is at the front and glazed so the crew can look straight down at the slung load. Civilian machines of this type are used in construction, erection work, and fighting large fires; the military equivalent is designated CH-54.
The Fire Tank designation refers to the firefighting tank the aircraft carries under its fuselage. The tank is filled with water and its contents are released over the seat of a fire. It is this tank that changes the machine's silhouette the most: a prominent angular unit appears under the beam that is absent on a standard crane configuration. The glazed cockpit is the most visible feature on this type, so finish and paint it before closing it in with the glazing. The tall landing gear is the most vulnerable spot when handling the finished model: let it cure undisturbed and carry the model by the fuselage, never by the landing-gear legs. Paint the rotor blades separate from the fuselage — it's easier to keep an even coat on them that way. Firefighting aircraft tend to carry bold warning colors, so a primer under the light color pays off.
