About product

Sturer Emil in 1:35 scale: photo-etched set, part one

A more extensive metal upgrade for a model of the German self-propelled gun, of the kind the Italian workshop Royal Model builds. Photo-etch makes it possible to render the thin plates of the superstructure, the tool brackets and the fine gratings in a way that would not be possible in plastic. The number in the name points out that another set follows on from this one. The set is intended for the Trumpeter kit.

Two machines that set out for the east

The designation Sturer Emil was carried by an experimental self-propelled gun built on the Henschel VK 30.01 chassis, originally developed for a heavy tank. On the open superstructure rested a long 12.8 cm gun, able to destroy targets at a range where the enemy was all but defenseless. Only two were built and both headed for the Eastern Front in 1942, where they operated in the area of Stalingrad. One of them, christened Max by its crew, fell into Soviet hands in the winter of 1943 and has survived to this day as a museum exhibit.

Building advice

Plan the work by subassembly and paint them before you join them, because a brush will not reach into the open fighting compartment later. Make the bends in the jaws of a bending tool, or at least over a straight steel edge. The scored grooves in the photo-etch show where the bend is meant to run.

Intended for

  • fans of German prototypes and small batches
  • builders who enjoy working on open superstructures
  • modelers looking for an unusual piece for a collection
  • experienced hands used to larger metal sets

The kit itself, putty and paints have to be bought separately.

FAQ

An experimental German 12.8 cm self-propelled gun on the VK 30.01 chassis. Only two examples were built.

The fighting compartment stays open at the top, and once it is assembled you will reach neither its corners with a brush nor with an airbrush.

A bending tool is ideal. Without one, lay a steel ruler exactly on the groove and fold the sheet over with the pressure of a flat tool.

For the Trumpeter kit in 1:35 scale. The base kit is not included in the package.
