An injection-molded plastic kit of the twin-engined British Handley Page Hampden bomber in 1:48 scale from the Ukrainian manufacturer ICM. The edition carrying the Flying Suitcase nickname offers a model with fine surface detail, a well worked-out pilot compartment and a bomb load. The kit stands out for the accurate geometry of its characteristically slim fuselage.
The Hampden was one of the three twin-engined bombers with which British Bomber Command entered the Second World War. It earned the nickname flying suitcase thanks to an exceptionally narrow and deep fuselage, in which the four-man crew was packed tightly one behind another like things in a case. Despite the cramped space the Hampden was fast and agile for its day and was used for night bombing, for mine laying and for attacks on shipping targets. It was powered by two Bristol Pegasus radial engines.
It is worth spending time on the cockpit and the internal structure before the fuselage is closed, because the canopy glazing gives a good view inside. Mask the clear parts and glue them with a light touch, ideally with a cement made for canopies. The typical finish for this subject is the British night camouflage combining dark green and brown on the upper surfaces with a black underside; apply the decals over a smooth gloss coat so that no silvering appears. Assemble the underwing and bomb bay load according to the instructions.
