An injection-molded plastic kit of the American Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat carrier fighter in 1:48 scale from Hobby Boss. The model captures the characteristic stubby fuselage of the aircraft with its narrow landing gear, and it offers a detailed cockpit, an engine with the option of an open cowling and clear cockpit parts. The F4F Wildcat was the main carrier fighter of the US Navy at the time the United States entered the Second World War. It was rugged, well armed and reliable, and despite lower performance than the later types it could, in the hands of well trained pilots, successfully face even more agile opponents. The F4F-4 version received folding wings for more economical stowage on the decks of aircraft carriers and heavier machine gun armament. The Wildcats bore the main weight of the fighting in the first half of the Pacific war, including the action over Guadalcanal, before more modern types replaced them in the front line.
Paint the cockpit and the engine in detail before you close the fuselage and the cowling; on this model the engine cowling can be left slightly open. Fit the canopy glazing after painting and mask the frames. Apply the blue-gray naval camouflage with an airbrush and use a gloss coat under the decals. The landing gear of the Wildcat is narrow and delicate, so seat it carefully for the model to stand straight. Build the weathering up with a fine wash and panel shading.
