This resin detail set from the Czech brand CMK holds underwing bomb racks and British 1000 pound bombs in 1:48 scale. It is not a model of an aircraft but an accessory meant for a plastic Hawker Tempest kit. Cast resin keeps the sharp edges of the fins and the fine surface detail of the bombs, which on parts of this size is noticed at first glance. The same line also has a version with the lighter 500 pound bombs; the difference lies precisely in the bombs, not in the racks.

The real subject

The Hawker Tempest followed on from the Typhoon and differed from its predecessor mainly in a new wing with a thinner section. The Mk.V version with the Napier Sabre engine was the most widespread. Besides fighter tasks the aircraft took part above all in attacks on ground targets, for which underwing bomb carriers were used. The heavier 1000 pound bomb was the upper limit of a normal load on this type.

Usage tips

Wash the parts in warm soapy water first; traces of mold release agent would otherwise prevent the paint from adhering. Cut the casting blocks off with a thin saw or a cutting disc, as nippers tend to snap resin along with a piece of the part. Sand wet and with respiratory protection. Use super glue for bonding, as plastic cement does not react with resin. The bombs look better if a primer is sprayed before any metallizing or varnishing; check the position of the racks against the drawing of your kit, because the spacing of the holes differs between moldings.
