A premium kit from the manufacturer Revell in 1:72 scale, and with two aircraft in one package at that: the carrier bomber NB-52 Stratofortress and the rocket-powered X-15, which can be hung under the wing of the finished model in the position before release. That is exactly the charm of this set: you do not assemble only a bomber but the whole pair that flew together. The Platinum Edition goes beyond the ordinary release: it contains 350 parts, a set of photo-etched parts for the fine detail and an extensive decal sheet. The surface textures are based on the original design documentation. The built model is 662 mm long, so it is a real piece for a display case. The difficulty is of the highest level, so count on several evenings of work.
The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is an eight-engine heavy strategic bomber that entered service in the 1950s and serves to this day, which puts it among the longest-used combat aircraft in history. Two machines were converted into carriers designated NB-52: they got a cutout in the right wing root for the fuselage of the carried aircraft, a pylon under the wing, measuring equipment and observation windows. From them the North American X-15 was launched, a rocket research aircraft that was released at altitude and only then lit its own rocket engine, because it could not take off from the ground by itself. The X-15 pushed the limits of speed and of altitude in piloted flight to the threshold of space, and the data from its flights was used by the American space program as well.
Given the dimensions, think about the mounting and the nose weight in advance, so that the model does not sit back on its tail. Glue the engine nacelles and the long wing in sections and watch the dihedral. Glue the photo-etched parts with super glue, not with cement for plastic. Apply a primer before painting, especially under metallic shades, which reveal every seam mercilessly. The bomber is often painted with a combination of gloss metal surfaces and a white underside; the X-15, by contrast, was characteristically all black, and the sheen and texture of black can be played out beautifully with flat and gloss varnishes. Lay a gloss coat before the decals and a flat clear coat over them.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
