A kit of the CH-54A Tarhe military crane helicopter with the heavy M-121 aerial bomb, in 1:72 scale. The bomb was carried slung under the fuselage of the machine.
Responsibility details are not available.
The CH-54A Tarhe is the military form of the Sikorsky S-64 crane helicopter. The fuselage is narrowed into a beam with no cargo hold, the load is slung underneath it and the tall fixed landing gear lets the machine drive over a load and lift it from below. The crew cabin is at the front and is glazed so that the slung load can be seen directly below. In the American army the machine was used to carry heavy loads and to recover crashed equipment from places that could not be reached by road.
The second half of the name refers to the heavy M-121 aerial bomb, which the helicopter carried slung under the fuselage and dropped on wooded terrain. The aim was not to hit a point target but to flatten the growth over an area where further helicopters could then land. Thanks to its size the bomb is a conspicuous element of the finished model and it determines how the machine looks from below. This is a plastic model of a helicopter in 1:72 scale; the number of parts, the color options and the exact package contents are stated in the manufacturer's instructions.
In 1:72 scale the machine comes out fairly large, but the parts of the landing gear and the beam stay thin, so separate them carefully and let the joints cure properly. Finish and paint the cabin before you close it with the glazing. Paint and fit the bomb last, otherwise it will get in the way while you work on the landing gear. Spray the rotor blades separated from the fuselage, as an even coat is easier to keep on them.
Paints, glue, filler and tools are not included, unless stated otherwise.
