1:72 German Submarine Type IX C U505 Platinum Edition is an extensive kit of a submarine from Revell, complemented according to the manufacturer with photo-etched parts, turned metal parts and a self-adhesive wooden deck.
Responsibility details are not available.
In its extent this kit belongs to the largest thing built in modeling: the finished submarine measures over a meter. According to the manufacturer the Platinum edition adds photo-etched accessories, turned metal parts and a self-adhesive wooden deck to the plastic parts. Movable elements such as extending periscopes and a snorkel are included as well.
The Type IX C was an oceangoing type of German submarine with a great range, meant for long patrols far from its bases. The U-505 wrote itself into history in June 1944, when an American task group forced her to surface and captured her together with her equipment: it is one of the few cases where an enemy vessel was successfully boarded on the open sea. The boat has been preserved and is today a museum exhibit in Chicago, so a builder can measure the model against reality.
Because of the length of the hull, think out in advance where you will put the model down and how you will transport it: it pays to prepare supports before you start gluing. Join the halves of the hull in parts and keep the joint clamped as you go, otherwise the long seam will open up. Lay the wooden deck onto a perfectly degreased and level base. Darken the underwater part with glazes and grade the salt or dust effects gradually, so that the basic shade stays visible.
The model is sold in an unassembled state, without paints and without glue; the modeler obtains those according to his own habits.
