What the set solves

Figures out of one box tend to have all the same head, and as soon as several of them stand on a base it shows at first glance. Exchanging the head is the smallest intervention by which a group of figures can be told apart, and at the same time the fastest way to change the equipment of a bunch of soldiers. This item belongs among accessories for figures and concerns heads with a gas mask. The exact number of pieces and their form are given in the manufacturer's instructions.

The real subject

The gas mask belonged to a soldier's equipment from the First World War, and in the form of a mask with a bag or with a case the armies wore it throughout the Second World War as well. A fitted mask changes the silhouette of a head so much that a viewer notices it at once: the face disappears and a hose and an eyepiece are added. On a diorama it suits scenes with training, with a gas alert and scenes where the figures are meant to show that something is threatening them.

Building and painting tips

• in 1:72 scale a standing figure measures barely two and a half centimeters, so the head is a mere few millimeters
• work with tweezers over a surface with a raised edge, otherwise a small part will end up on the floor
• cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the surface down
• level the neck before gluing, so that the head sits on the axis and does not look upward
• wash the parts in lukewarm water with a detergent before painting and apply a thin base coat
