The DSPIAE MT-EC circular cutter

A tool for cutting circles that works on the principle of a compass: the point is stuck into the center, the arm is set to the radius wanted and the blade describes a circle. The adjustment is stepless rather than in fixed increments, so the radius comes out exactly and you do not have to compromise between two sizes in the range. This is the basic version of the whole range, with more elaborate versions from the same manufacturer above it.

What it is for

Most often for cutting circular masks out of masking tape and film: national insignia, wheels, headlights, engine covers. Beyond that for discs of thin plastic, paper and similar materials. A circle cut freehand never comes out regular, and on a model the irregularity shows at once, especially on a pair of symmetrical elements.

How to work with it

• Put a mat under the material that the center point can be stuck into.
• Try the radius on an offcut first; accuracy is tuned on a test piece, not on the part.
• Describe the circle lightly several times over rather than in one heavy stroke.
• Wipe the tool after work, as adhesive from the tape settles on the blade and on the point.

Who it is for

The cutter is a suitable choice for anyone who needs circular masks occasionally and does not want to invest in a higher version. Anyone who masks circles regularly will rather appreciate the more elaborate version with a radius scale and a firmer grip.
