Acrylic Color BLACKROOT GREY, a Green Stuff World acrylic

A water-based acrylic from Green Stuff World for painting figures and gaming models. It is thinned with water, dries quickly and takes further layers over it. According to the name it is a very dark gray, that is the shade that plays the part of a colored black in a palette.

Why a dark neutral instead of pure black

Pure black is a trap in mixing. It is zero brightness, so anything you mix it with loses saturation at once: red becomes mud, green becomes military dullness and blue becomes simply gray. A very dark gray does the same job but lets the color breathe: it drops the lightness by a good deal while keeping the tone. It can also be worked upward. A dark gray as the starting point, the target color mixed into it step by step and highlights at the end is how a scale comes about in which the shadows stay recognizably colored. On large black areas such as leather or a cloak, use it in place of black as a full coat and keep black only for the deepest grooves, where there really is meant to be nothing.

For players and modelers who mix their own scales and want their shadows colored rather than dead. Shake the bottle before use, as dark pigments settle to the bottom especially readily.
