A plastic science fiction kit from the Japanese brand Bandai. Bandai uses the snap-fit system: the parts are nipped off the sprues and snap together, and you need no glue. The plastic is already colored right through, so the finished model has its areas of color as soon as it is assembled. The name Ryujinmaru is Japanese and refers to a robot in the style of traditional armor; check the exact scope of the package and the dimensions of the model on the box.
Robots that draw on the Japanese aesthetic of a warrior in plate armor have a lot of large smooth surfaces broken up by sharp edges and decorative features. It is exactly that sort of surface that shows the difference between bare plastic and a surface finish most: the same part looks quite different once you knock the plastic sheen off it, and different again if you leave selected areas glossy instead.
Start the assembly by sorting the parts by subassembly and do not cut the sprues up in advance. Cut the gates off in two stages and level the rest with a scalpel, so that no whitened plastic is left on an edge. If you want to move the surface on, reach for varnish from a spray can or an airbrush: a matte varnish unifies the sheen of the whole model and removes the toy impression, semi-gloss suits the areas of armor and gloss varnish is best left to the decorative details. If you set about repainting, lay a thin primer under the paint; otherwise smooth pre-colored plastic holds it less well. Apply the coats lightly and let them become properly tacky.
The model is built by snapping the parts together; glue is not needed for assembly. Paints, varnishes and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
