Chipping is the modeling term for scraped and flaking paint. On a real machine the finish wears through first where the crew walks or where something is opened repeatedly: on the edges of hatches, at entrances, on steps, around grab handles, on the edges of fenders and on surfaces that equipment rubs against. It is exactly these small chips that give a model the feel of a machine in use, because an evenly clean finish reads as a display piece rather than as a vehicle in service.
It is an item from the ATOM COLOR line by AMMO of Mig Jimenez, intended for precisely this effect. The thinner, the thinning ratio, the way it is applied and the cleaning of tools all follow the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging, because the name of the product says nothing about its composition. Before you start on the model, try the product on a plastic offcut or on a spare part with the same base as your model.
Keep the effect sparing and irregular, because evenly spaced chips give away the modeler's hand. Stick to the places where real wear arises and match the size of the marks to the scale. Work in layers and let the surface flash off between them. A coat of clear over the finished effect will unify it, but check that clear on a test piece so it does not fight with the base.
The model, thinner, brushes and other aids are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
