ATOM COLOR Earth Brown — an AMMO acrylic modeling paint (20 ml)

ATOM COLOR Earth Brown is a modeling paint, not a kit. It is a water-thinnable acrylic of the ATOM range from AMMO in a bottle of 20 ml, matte, with a very fine pigment and good flow, so it can be worked with a brush and in an airbrush. It is odorless and is thinned with water or with the thinner of the same range. The shade is an earthy brown, a more saturated and darker variant of the earth tone.

Use

• Shadows and hollows of earthy surfaces: worn ruts, potholes, gaps, the undersides of chassis.
• Deeper, wetter deposits of mud, clods and splashes over a lighter earth base.
• Darker brown soil, peat, compost and freshly dug earth in dioramas.
• An underpainting beneath dark pigments and brown washes; toning dust layers to a warmer shade.
• For an airbrush, thin it with roughly 30 percent thinner from the ATOM range.

How it differs from ATOM COLOR Earth

On screen the two shades look almost the same; in the hand the difference is clear. ATOM COLOR Earth is lighter and more clay-like, dry earth and dust, the typical base over large areas. Earth Brown is darker, browner and more saturated by comparison; you bring it in where the earth is meant to be deeper, wetter or in shadow. In practice it is best to have both and layer them: Earth as the base over surfaces, Earth Brown into hollows, shadows and deeper deposits. The contrast between them gives earth a depth that one color never will. Earthy shades, moreover, should never be applied as a continuous coat: they are done thinned and uneven, like dirt, by stippling, in patches, sprayed from a distance and with the surface underneath showing through. The dried paint is durable, so pigments, washes and oil paints can be laid over it without risk.

For builders of dioramas, military equipment and railroad scenes and for figure painters alike, wherever earth needs a darker, more saturated tone for shadows and depths.
