On modern machines the star recess has replaced the ordinary cross-head screw everywhere a higher torque has to be carried without ruining the head. A modeler knows it from photographs of the real subject: on frames, brake discs and engine covers it is clearly recognizable. In a kit, however, such a shape is not captured; a mold will draw it out at best as a rounded pimple. A separate element therefore does work on a model that plastic cannot.
The element represents a screw with a torx head in a round, that is domed profile with no sharp edges. The size is 0.5 millimeters and the package holds this single size, not a set of diameters. A joint this small belongs in places a viewer examines from close by, and in the large scales of motorcycle models it makes sense even where a coarser head would be distracting. Check the arrangement of the joints against a photograph of the real subject; with small screws the regularity of the spacing shows more than the shape of the head itself.
Work over a light-colored tray or dish from which you can pick the element up if it falls. It is picked up with fine-tipped tweezers, or on the moistened tip of a toothpick. The position is best held in a shallow drilled recess. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, of which a trace carried on a piece of wire is enough, and the excess has to be wiped away at once. Painting is more convenient before fitting, on double-sided tape, because a brush can no longer reach a head that is glued in place. Wash and degrease the surface of the model beforehand, otherwise the primer will not hold.
The model, the paints and the glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
