A star-shaped torx drive, a cylindrical head, a diameter of 0.7 mm. The size of brake and load-bearing joints.
Responsibility details are not available.
On models of present-day motorcycles this step has one entirely typical place: the screws of the brake discs. On a real machine it is these that the star drive established itself on first, because they call for exact tightening and must not be rounded off. Worked out to 1:12, this diameter gives a real head 8.4 mm wide, that is an M6 screw.
The credibility of a disc does not rest on the individual head but on the regularity of the whole assembly. There tend to be five or six of them, spaced around a pitch circle, and the eye spots at once when one of them steps out of the spacing or out of the plane. It therefore pays to draw the spacings out beforehand and to pre-drill all the holes at once, while the part is still separate and reachable from both sides.
On instruments and small covers a protruding head starts to compete with the shapes around it. The boundary tends to be simple: if the seating surface is narrower than about ten times the diameter of the head, reach for a finer step. With this size that means a surface narrower than seven millimeters.
A raised head of this diameter casts a clearly legible shadow, so once the part is painted there is no need to bring anything else out. If you reach for a wash all the same, choose a thin one, so that it settles only in the star and does not fill the gap around the circumference.
Leave the fitting to the end, after the part has been painted. Elements of this size are very hard to sand and to paint, and masking them tends to be more laborious than the whole rest of the surface. Do the dry seating for practice before painting, though, so that the holes can be adjusted while the surface is still bare.
