Eleven tenths of a millimeter, a size that is visible from a distance. That is precisely why the quality of the head surface matters more here than with the fine grades.
Responsibility details are not available.
The bigger the head, the more closely the viewer notices it. At eleven tenths the hex is no longer a mere suggestion but a full shape, and that means every trace of careless installation, every dried drop of glue and every overly thick coat of paint will show on it.
For builders who finish models to competition standard or photograph them close up, and for those who work in larger scales, where the head is not a texture but a separate element of the composition. It presupposes the habit of working cleanly: a degreased part, an accurately drilled hole and glue applied in such an amount that it does not come out anywhere.
Anyone looking for a fine base under paint who only wants to hint that there are joints there should go a few tenths lower. In small scales this dimension will be distracting and will draw attention away from the shape of the model.
The load-bearing joints of the engine and frame, the swingarm mounting, the feet of step parts, the hangers on commercial vehicles. On models in larger scales it also looks good where the head is the only detail on an otherwise smooth surface, because the collar gives the joint depth.
Install them only after the part has been primed, not before. You will spare yourself a blurred shape, and any paint that runs under the collar can be carefully traced over with a fine brush once dry.
And one more word on layout: space the heads of this size rather sparingly. Three accurately seated pieces in the right places make a better impression than ten scattered at random over the whole part.
