The set solves a situation familiar to anyone who builds from a photograph: you do not know in advance which diameter will fit a particular place. Instead of three separate purchases you get the whole fine band together and make your choice at the bench, with the part in your hand. For a first build with metal hardware it is the most sensible start.
Hold a piece against the place and look at the model from a distance, not through a magnifier. Magnification tempts you to choose a larger diameter than is actually right, because under a lens a fine shape looks poor. What decides is the overall impression at a normal viewing distance. A separate combined package covers the band from eight tenths upward.
The practical approach is to start with the smallest grade and work up. A hole can always be widened, never narrowed, so if you reach for the coarser diameter first, you have definitively lost the finer option in that place.
