A joint with a bold wide washer, nine tenths of a millimeter in diameter. The large mating surface is at the same time the greatest challenge for the paintwork.
Responsibility details are not available.
A widened mating surface changes the whole question of surface finish. While the recess in the head is closed up by the coat of paint, the flat disc of the washer puts everything on show instead: an uneven application, dust caught while wet, and the direction in which the brush moved. And nine tenths of a millimeter is still a dimension at which a single speck amounts to a visible lump.
A glossy surface on so small an area reflects point light and visually enlarges it, so the washer begins to look heavier than it really is. A semi-gloss or satin finish keeps the size under control and at the same time takes better to the dark mixture drawn around the rim afterward, which separates the disc from the surface beneath it. It is precisely that rim shadow that decides whether the component is seen as a separate part.
The surface the washer is to seat against must be flat and free of sanding dust, otherwise it seats at an angle and the shadow around the rim comes out uneven. The glue is metered with a point, not as a drop, because a surplus creeps up the rim and floods exactly the detail for which the wider variant is bought.
Compared with the version with an ordinary washer, the disc here is noticeably wider, which suits places where the joint should visually spread the load, that is the mounting of fenders, covers or footpegs.
The brand also makes a narrower version in the same band, so the choice between them is a question of how conspicuous the result should be.
