Bolts with an internal hex and a large washer, 1.2 mm

An add-on set of small pieces of fastening hardware for models. The head has a recess for an internal hex, that is a socket head bolt, and an enlarged washer goes with it. The size of the part is 1.2 mm, which is one of the larger dimensions of this family.

What it is suited to

A socket head joint belongs to more modern machinery: it is found on engine covers, brake discs, the mounting of a tank and on the parts of today's motorcycles and sports cars. It is told apart from a hex head at first glance, because it has no raised edges but a recessed opening in the middle. It is precisely that opening which holds a shadow, so the detail shows even under a flat paint.

Building and painting tips

• Do not flood the recess in the head with glue or thick paint, otherwise you lose what sets the part apart from an ordinary head.
• Apply the paint in a thin coat; once dry, bring out the opening with a darker shade applied with the tip of a brush.
• Level the surface under the washer so that it seats around its whole circumference.
• Install only after the seams have been sanded and the surroundings primed.
• Check the recommended method of fixing in the manufacturer's instructions and meter the glue with the tip of a needle.
