Hex bolts with a straight slot, size 0.5 mm

An add-on set of small fastening hardware for models. The head combines two features: a hexagonal outline and a straight slot for a flat screwdriver. The 0.5 mm size is the smallest of this family.

Where such a joint belongs

The combination of a hex and a slot appears on older machinery and on parts that were tightened by hand, that is on covers, caps, instruments or brackets. The slot also gives the head a direction: when there is a row of such bolts on a real machine, their slots do not all point the same way, and it is precisely this irregularity that makes a model come alive.

Building and painting tips

• The 0.5 mm dimension really is tiny, so reckon with fine-tipped tweezers and good light.
• When seating the parts, turn them so that the slots do not all point one way.
• Apply the paint thinly; a thick coat floods the slot and the head then looks like an ordinary dot.
• Install them only after the seams have been sanded and the surrounding surface primed.
• Check the recommended method of fixing in the manufacturer's instructions and meter the glue with the tip of a needle.

For a modeler who is finishing small joints on a smaller model or in places where a bigger head would look coarse. It comes into its own on motorcycles, cars and machinery alike, because what decides is the size of the part, not the kind of model. It is an accessory to a kit, not the kit itself.
