The paint separates when it stands: the denser pigment sinks to the bottom and a thinner portion is left on top. Before each use, therefore, stir the contents thoroughly until the color and the consistency are uniform; with small packages a brief shake and stirring with a stick help. Take out only as much as you will use in one session, and mix it in a separate container. That way no thinner or residue of another paint gets into the stock in the original package.
Close the package straight after taking paint out, and wipe the rim first so that a dried layer does not stop the lid closing next time. Store it dry, out of direct sunlight and out of the reach of children. Paint that has dried on the rim can usually still be used once stirred, but filter the lumps out through a fine sieve first, otherwise they will show up in the middle of the coat.
