The accessory represents an explosion, that is, the column thrown upward that stays in the air for a fraction of a second after a bomb lands. It brings movement and a moment into a scene: once it stands behind equipment or between buildings, a diorama stops being a static scene and starts to read as action. The height of 100 mm sets how high the column rises above the base, and it is at the same time the main dimension to reckon with when laying out both the scene and the display case.
The supplier offers the effect as universal, that is, with no tie to one scale. An explosion has no fixed size that could be compared with a real subject, so the same column will serve in a scene with equipment and in a scene with figures. What decides is rather the ratio to the surroundings: the smaller the models around it, the larger the charge that a column a hundred millimeters tall will suggest. Stand the effect up dry next to your finished models, therefore, before you set aside a place for it in a scene.
Fit the effect only once the terrain is finished, so that it is not rubbed during the work. Sink the bottom into the base so that the transition into the terrain is not visible as a sharp edge; scatter the surroundings with the same material as the rest of the scene. If you paint the effect, work in thin layers and build the shades from the bottom upward, from darker earth at the foot to lighter dust at the top. Before painting, wash the part in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let it dry. Choose a suitable glue according to the actual material of the part.
