Carbon Finish 12 is a sheet from the Hasegawa range of surface films. It is not a kit or a part for a particular model but a self-adhesive material with a carbon fiber weave pattern, used to cover the surfaces of parts that are already built. The number in the name distinguishes the coarseness of the pattern within the range, and a variant with a finer texture is sold alongside it. Against painting carbon with a brush or through a stencil, the result is more even and the work considerably faster.
The surface has to be smooth, free of dust and degreased, because every imperfection will show through the thin material. First trace the shape of the part onto a paper template, transfer that onto the sheet and cut it out with a sharp knife with a new blade. Lay the material down from the center toward the edges and press it progressively, so that no bubbles are left under it. On curved surfaces mild warming helps, after which the material conforms to the shape better. Trim the overhangs in place along the edge of the part. Keep the direction of the weave the same on every part, otherwise the result looks disjointed. The finished surface can be coated with clear varnish, matched to the rest of the surface of the model.
