This item is not a kit and not an accessory for a model. It is a modeling aid for those who copy parts themselves. The set holds segmented wall pieces from which you assemble a closed molding frame around a master. A two-part silicone compound is then poured into it, and once cured a mold is formed in which copies can be cast from resin or from plaster. Compared with an improvised frame of cardboard or adhesive tape, the modular system has the advantage that it holds straight edges, can be taken apart and used again and again, and its size can be adapted to the size of the part being cast.
The typical use is copying small parts that a modeler needs in larger numbers — wheels, crates, drums, sacks, stones for a diorama, small interior parts or a replacement for a part that has been damaged. The walls are assembled into a rectangle or a square according to the plan of the master, and the height is chosen so that a layer of silicone is left above the master. The system will manage both a one-part open mold and a two-part mold cast in two stages.
Coat both the master and the inner faces of the walls with a mold release agent, otherwise the silicone will stick. Seal the joints between the segments and against the base with modeling clay or plasticine, so that the runny silicone does not leak out. Mix the silicone exactly to the ratio given by its manufacturer and pour it in a thin stream from a height into a single spot — the compound then spreads out by itself and carries fewer air bubbles. Let the mold cure fully, and only then take the frame apart. Work with both resin and silicone in a well-ventilated room and use gloves.
The silicone compound, the resin and the mold release agent are not included in the package. When working with chemicals, ventilate and protect your hands and eyes.
