A photo-etched detail set with the side skirts over the running gear for a model of the British Centurion Mk.III tank in 1:35 scale. It is not a vehicle kit but an accessory for a plastic model. On the Centurion the skirts are a prominent element of the silhouette, visible at first glance, and yet they are thin sheet metal — and it is precisely the thickness that a plastic molding can never hold. The metal version matches the scale considerably better. Check the exact contents of the package against the illustration on the packaging.
The Centurion was a British tank of the postwar generation, whose development finished at the close of the Second World War and which then served for decades in many armies. The Mk.III version received a 20-pounder gun, roughly 84 mm, with barrel stabilization. The Horstmann suspension was covered at the sides by sheet metal skirts, which kept mud from building up on the tracks and the wheels; in service they were often removed or damaged, so in period photographs vehicles are seen in both forms.
Fit the skirts only after the running gear is finished, ideally after it has been painted and dusted — otherwise the tracks are hard to reach. Separate the parts with a scalpel on a hard surface and make the bends in a bender along the whole length, so that the edge is not wavy. Degrease the metal and cover it with a primer. They are glued with cyanoacrylate or with slow epoxy. The malleability of the metal allows a bent or missing part to be suggested, which gives a model the credibility of use. After painting, accentuate the seams with a dark wash and add mud and dust pigments to the lower areas.
