Tamiya — modeling cable 0.50 mm, a 2 m roll (for scales 1:6 to 1:24)

A black modeling cable of 0.50 mm outer diameter in a roll of 2 meters. It is not a kit but a detailing material with which wiring, lines and hoses are added to a model. The manufacturer intends it for models of cars and motorcycles in roughly 1:6 to 1:24 scale (typically 1:12 and 1:24 for cars, 1:6 and 1:12 for motorcycles). According to the manufacturer the cable has an inner wire core in a soft sheath, which makes it pliable: it can be shaped into curves with your fingers and stays in the shape you set, does not spring back and does not have to be tensioned anywhere. That is exactly its advantage over a coarse plastic part and over bare stiff wire.

Use

• ignition leads and engine wiring,
• brake and fuel hoses, lines in the chassis,
• electrical installation in the interior and in the engine bay,
• hoses and lines in dioramas (workshop, pit box, depot),
• generally any thin line where a plastic part would look too coarse.

Work tips

The cable is cut with sharp scissors or a scalpel. It is glued with cyanoacrylate — ordinary cement for plastic works by dissolving polystyrene, here it has nothing to dissolve and the joint would not hold. A proven procedure: push the end of the cable into a pre-drilled hole (a drill of roughly 0.5-0.6 mm) and secure it with a drop of cyanoacrylate — the joint is strong and looks clean. The cable is black, so in most uses it does not have to be painted; if you do paint it, count on the fact that paint holds less well on a smooth flexible surface than on plastic — apply a thin coat and then do not bend the part unnecessarily.
