Chibi-Maru Fleet Chokai/Maya is a cute shortened kit of a Japanese Takao-class heavy cruiser from Fujimi — the name refers to the sister ships Chokai and Maya. This is not a scale model but a deliberately distorted, friendly form of the ship.

A Takao-class heavy cruiser as cutely rendered by the Chibi-Maru Fleet line of the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi. The name refers to the sister ships Chokai and Maya. The miniature with its shortened hull and enlarged massive superstructure is not a scale model — it is a deliberately distorted, likeable caricature that nonetheless keeps the characteristic silhouette of the Japanese heavy cruisers.
Chokai and Maya belonged to the four heavy cruisers of the Takao class, completed at the start of the 1930s. The class stood out for its massive, castle-like bridge superstructure and its heavy armament of 203 mm guns completed by torpedo tubes. Chokai became known as a flagship in the night Battle of Savo Island in 1942, while Maya was later modified with the emphasis on anti-aircraft defense. Both ships were lost in the autumn of 1944 during the fighting for the Philippines.
The build is undemanding and quick. Paint the hull and the superstructures in the gray shade of the Imperial Japanese Navy, and a fine dark wash will bring out the intricate superstructure, the turrets and the torpedo tubes — it is precisely that intricacy that makes the Takao-class cruisers a rewarding subject. For younger builders we recommend the help of an adult because of the work with glue.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
