A diorama base with a staircase in 1:35 brings height and structure into a scene. It suits a figure that is meant to stand above its surroundings and a city display alike.
Responsibility details are not available.
A compact diorama scene whose central element is a staircase. It is one of the few diorama motifs that create a difference in height by themselves, and that is exactly why it suits anywhere a figure or an object is meant to stand on a different level from the rest of the composition.
Flat bases have one disadvantage: the viewer's eye slides over them without stopping. Stairs solve that, because they lead the gaze from the bottom upward and suggest movement straight away. A figure placed halfway up a staircase looks as though it were heading somewhere, even standing still. Besides that, stairs give a scene a clear foreground and background, so even a single model looks like part of a larger place.
Never paint stone with a single color. Build it from two or three close grays and make the individual steps slightly different, so that the surface does not look like concrete from a mold. Draw the edges of the steps out with a dry brush, because that is where stone wears the most. Let a darker wash into the joints and let it flow of its own accord. Hint at the green of moss with pigment or stippling only in the shaded corners where it would really hold. Keep the layer of dust at the foot and in the corners, not in the middle of the steps, where people walk.
The casting has no surface finish, so you choose the shades of the stone and the degree of wear according to your own idea.
