Grumman AF-3S Guardian is a plastic kit of the American carrier anti-submarine aircraft in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Special Hobby. The AF-3S version differs from the other Guardians in its retractable magnetic anomaly detector.

This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale represents the American carrier anti-submarine aircraft Grumman AF-3S Guardian. The model is released by the Czech maker Special Hobby and it is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The package holds injection-molded plastic parts, clear parts for the glazing and a decal sheet with markings of US Navy aircraft of the 1950s.
The Guardian was the largest single-engine piston carrier aircraft of the US Navy and its first aircraft designed directly to fight submarines. The powerplant was a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine. It entered service in 1950 and ended its operational career after roughly five years, when the Grumman S2F Tracker replaced it. Guardians worked in pairs: the search version carried a search radar and operators, while the attack version carried the armament and the means to fix a target. The AF-3S version differed from the others in a retractable magnetic anomaly detector boom, with which the position of a submerged vessel was confirmed. Over three hundred aircraft were built in all, in three main versions.
This is a short-run mold, so fit the parts dry first and count on filling and sanding the joints of the fuselage and the wing. The interior of the cockpit and of the operators' compartment is clearly visible on the Guardian, so it is worth spending time on it before you close the fuselage. Mask the glazing carefully, and it is a good idea to lay a primer under the all-metal surface so that the engraved panel lines stand out. The standard naval blue-gray finish sprays well with an airbrush in several thin coats; lay a gloss varnish under the decals and knock the surface back with a matte coat once dry if needed.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
