About product

Chibi-Maru Fleet Kagero, a stylized non-scale kit from Fujimi

The Chibi-Maru Fleet range from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi translates real warships into a foreshortened, cartoon-like form. The hull is only a few centimeters long, but the superstructures, the funnels and the armament keep the shape by which you will recognize the subject. The model therefore has no scale and cannot be lined up with scale ships. The package contains injection-molded plastic parts; the exact contents of the package and the number of parts are stated on the box and in the instructions.

The real subject

Kagero was the first ship of the Japanese destroyer class of the same name, brought into service at the end of the 1930s. The Kagero class came about as a fast torpedo and escort unit with 12.7 cm guns in twin gun turrets and with torpedo tubes for large-caliber torpedoes, supplemented by a stock of reload torpedoes. The ships of this class were employed across the whole Pacific, mainly around the Solomon Islands. Kagero herself was lost in 1943 in that area. The stylized model takes her typical low bow, the pair of funnels and the torpedo tubes amidships.

Building and painting tips

A short hull has large smooth surfaces on which every seam stands out, so sand the parting line before painting and fill it if necessary. Separate small items such as the masts and the gun barrels with a sharp knife or with nippers only just before gluing. The painting procedure is the same as on scale ships, only smaller: a gray base, a darker shade on the deck, a thin wash into the recesses and a dry brush on the edges of the superstructures. Because of the small area, apply the paint in thin coats so that the engraved detail does not fill in. The model stands stably on its own.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers who want a quick build with no demands of scale
  • Collectors of Japanese naval subjects in stylized form
  • Beginners and younger modelers looking for an approachable ship model
  • Filling out a cabinet with a stylized Japanese fleet

The model is supplied unassembled. Paints, glue and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

None. The Chibi-Maru range is deliberately foreshortened and stylized, so the model does not hold a scale ratio to the subject.

No. The models of this range have a simple structure and are among the most approachable ship kits. The exact number of parts is given in the manufacturer's instructions.

Ordinary modeling paints will do: acrylics for a brush as well as for an airbrush. Because of the small area, apply thin coats so that the engraved detail does not fill in.

Both were destroyers of the same class. Kagero was its first, prototype ship, and Yukikaze one of the later units.
