Abteilung 502 Claiborne Guards - Alabama Volunteers 1861 is a resin collector's figure of a volunteer from the American Civil War in the 54 mm format, meant to be painted and displayed.
Responsibility details are not available.
The figure from the brand Abteilung 502 belongs to a range devoted to the Alabama volunteer companies of the first year of the American Civil War. The figure of 54 mm in the name gives the height of the figure, not a scale - it is an established collector's format.
A range, not a single item
Further figures of the same range of Alabama volunteers are also made. A collector can thus put together a group of characters with a shared theme and treat the year 1861 as a whole, without having to look across various brands with a different style of casting.
The Claiborne Guards were among the volunteer companies raised in Alabama in 1861. Similar units formed at local level in the first year of the conflict and their dress depended on what a community or a soldier's own pocket could provide. Uniformity in today's sense did not exist: coats of various cuts and colors, civilian footwear and equipment from various sources met within one company. For a figure painter it is an ideal situation, because the color approach is not tied to a single regulation.
Wash the casting in lukewarm water with dish soap and a soft brush - remains of the mold release agent are the most common reason why paint does not hold on resin. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutter, level the surfaces with a file and sand the parting seams down; protect your breathing while sanding and use wet abrasive. Make the joints with super glue, complete the gaps with filler and sand them. Then apply a thin coat of base paint, which will unify the surface and reveal any flaws. Build the face up in layers from the shadows to the highlights; on cloth, oils and glazes with a long working time work well. Leave the metal, the buttons and the straps for the end.
The figure is supplied unassembled and unpainted, cast in resin. Glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
