About product

Coarse Grinding File — a U-STAR coarse sanding stick

A sanding stick from the U-STAR tool range, made for the coarsest stage of sanding a plastic model. The word coarse in the name marks a coarse grade of abrasive: the tool takes material off quickly and is built for leveling a shape, not for a final shine. In a workshop it therefore comes first, right after the parts have been taken off the sprue.

What it is suited to

The most common job for a coarse sanding stick is the mold parting line. An injection mold leaves it on every part as a thin ridge — on aircraft fuselages it runs the whole length, and on barrels, struts and cylindrical parts it is obvious at first glance once the paint is on. A few strokes with a coarse abrasive take it down to the surface faster than any fine tool. It is also used to level sprue remains standing above the surface and to shape cured filler roughly on larger areas.

How to work with it

Sand in short strokes in one direction and keep checking the shape against the light. A coarse abrasive takes material off faster than a modeler expects, and a hollow is then considerably harder to level than the original ridge was. On curved parts press as little as possible, so that no flat facet appears. Never leave the coarse step as the last one — its marks are brought out under a gloss clear coat, so it is always followed by a finer sanding stick and finally by a sponge or paper of a higher grit.

How it differs from an improvised substitute

A loose piece of abrasive paper bends under the fingers and rounds off edges that should stay sharp. A sanding stick with a firm backing holds a plane, so a surface stays flat and an edge stays an edge. That is the main reason it is worth having in a workshop alongside a set of papers.

Who the tool is for

  • Builders of injection-molded plastic models who deal with parting lines on fuselages, barrels and cylindrical parts
  • Modelers working with resin, where casting blocks have to be taken down
  • Anyone who fills gaps and needs fast removal before moving on to fine steps
  • Filling out bench equipment alongside the finer grades in the same range

FAQ

It will not replace it; it complements it. A sanding stick holds a plane and is used where a surface should stay flat and an edge sharp. Loose paper, by contrast, is better on curved shapes and in recesses.

The name of the item does not give a numerical value; it marks the grade only by the word coarse. So for surfaces that will be visible once painted, always count on a finer step to follow.

Yes, a coarse grade is commonly used for shaping cured filler and for taking down the casting blocks of resin parts. With resin, sand with respiratory protection and keep extracting or sweeping the dust away.

No, this is a bench tool. It is used in building any model regardless of scale and of the manufacturer of the kit.
