About product

Contact Cement 100 ml, Green Stuff World

A contact adhesive in a 100 ml package from Green Stuff World. What it is: an adhesive of the contact type, that is one applied to both mating surfaces, left to become tacky, and only then brought together. What it is not: it is not a modeling cement for plastic that would melt polystyrene, and it is not a cyanoacrylate glue. According to the manufacturer the joint stays flexible, which is exactly what hard adhesives cannot do.

How it is used

  • With a brush, a spatula or another suitable applicator, apply an even layer to both surfaces so that the whole bonded area is covered.
  • Leave it to become tacky to the touch; the manufacturer gives roughly 10 to 30 minutes depending on conditions.
  • Line the surfaces up carefully and press them firmly together. Note: the joint forms at once and cannot be corrected, so the parts have to sit right the first time.
  • There is no need to hold or clamp the joint for a long time, as is usual with dispersion adhesives.

What it is intended for

The manufacturer states use on leather, wood, EVA foam, rubber, metal and some kinds of plastic. It typically suits cosplay and costume work (foam armor, weapons, accessories), textile and leather items, covering and upholstering bases, and joints that have to survive bending and stress. It is precisely with flexible materials, where a hard joint cracks, that a contact adhesive is at home.

Who it is for

For modelers and hobby makers who bond foam, leather, textile, wood, rubber and metal, that is materials that plastic cement cannot handle. Green Stuff World is an established maker of hobby materials and accessories.

The manufacturer does not state the chemical composition or the solvent base of this adhesive. It is therefore safer not to assume that it is harmless to polystyrene (the ordinary plastic of kits) and to clear parts: contact adhesives are often solvent-based and a strong solvent can attack or cloud plastic. Before using it on a plastic model, always test the adhesive on a hidden spot or on a waste sprue and follow the instructions and safety symbols on the packaging. Work in a well-ventilated room, avoid contact with skin and eyes, and keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

Plastic cement melts the surface of polystyrene and joins the parts by welding them. A contact adhesive is applied to both surfaces, left to become tacky and holds immediately once they are brought together; the joint forms by two tacky layers adhering and it stays flexible.

Not without a test first. The manufacturer states only in general terms that it suits some kinds of plastic and does not publish the chemical composition, so there is no assurance that it will not attack polystyrene or clear plastic. Test the adhesive on a scrap piece or a hidden spot first, or reach for an adhesive intended specifically for plastic.

The manufacturer gives roughly 10 to 30 minutes depending on conditions; the adhesive has to be tacky to the touch. Only then are the surfaces lined up and pressed firmly together. The joint is immediate and cannot be shifted, so the parts have to sit right the first time.

Flexible and porous materials: EVA foam, leather, textile, rubber, wood and metal. Typical uses are cosplay and costumes, covering and upholstering bases, and joints that bend and take stress.
