Two-tone turfs – early autumn combine two ocher-yellow autumn tones in a single finished grassy piece. In a scene they are simply laid down and glued.

A finished painted turf from the Czech diorama vegetation manufacturer Model Scene. In a diorama it is simply laid down and glued — it is not a loose static grass and you need no applicator for it. The two-tone version combines two close shades, so the growth is not uniform and has lighter as well as darker areas across its surface. On a model that is a fundamental difference: uneven color reads as real vegetation, a uniform surface as a carpet.
The early autumn tuning builds on ocher and yellow tones complemented by remnants of green in the ground layer. It corresponds roughly to September and the first half of October, that is the period when the grass is losing its color but still stands upright and is not yet lying beaten down on the ground. In the two-tone version this transition shows directly on the turf: one component has already faded, while the other keeps a remnant of its richness. The scene is visually brightened by it and dark vehicles and soil stand out against it.
Clean the base, apply a thin layer of PVA glue, press the turf down and weight it until dry. Always thin the edges out, so that no visible edge is left, and cover the transition into the terrain with soil, sand or leaf litter. Choose the orientation with regard to the lighting of the scene — the more faded areas on sunlit surfaces, the richer ones in shade. You will strengthen the autumn atmosphere by scattering fine leaves into the growth before the glue dries.
The turfs are supplied finished and painted. The glue, the base and any further scenery materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
