A 30 ml bottle of acrylic paint from the Dry Brush range by Green Stuff World. The Dry Violet shade is violet. The range is named after the technique, but the contents of the item are a paint that you apply with a brush.

The brush decides the result

Dry brushing is the only technique in which the tool matters as much as the paint. A brush with shorter, stiffer bristles is used, one that splays under pressure and passes over an edge with its whole face. A soft detail brush is not suitable for this work and above all will not survive it, because wiping on a towel and pressure on the surface deform the bristles permanently. Modelers therefore usually keep an older brush for dry brushing and save their best brushes for detail. The paint must never get as far as the metal ferrule, where it dries, splays the bristles and ruins the brush for good.

Use

• Choose a brush with short, stiff bristles, ideally round or slightly angled.
• Pick the paint up only on the tip of the bristles, never along their whole length as far as the ferrule.
• Wipe the excess off on a paper towel until a stroke no longer leaves a continuous mark.
• Clean the brush as soon as you finish, before the paint dries at the root of the bristles.
• For a series of figures or parts, prepare two brushes and alternate them, because clean bristles work more evenly.
