This injection-molded plastic kit from the German manufacturer Revell captures the CH-47D Chinook heavy transport helicopter in 1:144 scale. With machines of this size the small scale is an advantage: the finished model takes up little room on a shelf and still keeps its characteristic silhouette. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The Chinook is a twin-rotor helicopter with a tandem arrangement of its main rotors: two counter-rotating rotors, one at the front and one at the rear of the fuselage, remove the need for a tail rotor to compensate torque and free the whole volume of the fuselage for cargo. The D version was a modernization standard: it received more powerful engines, reworked avionics and modified rotor blades. The fuselage has an angular cross-section with a cargo ramp at the rear, and under the fuselage there are three hooks for sling loads. The machine is used to carry people, materiel and underslung loads into country without landing areas.
In 1:144 scale a clean surface is crucial: the parting lines of the mold and the gate marks show more on a smooth fuselage than the fine engraving does, so sand the joints down and, if need be, scribe the lines again. The rotor blades are long and thin; when gluing them, let them dry flat, otherwise they bow. The cabin glazing is small, and a liquid mask pays off. Spray the paint in genuinely thin coats, so that the detail is not lost. Use a gloss varnish before the decals and a matte one after them. Keep the weathering fine: in a small scale a heavy wash looks unnatural.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
