Helmet Insignia WWII - part 1 – decals 1:16

Why the large scale is more demanding

For figures, 1:16 is a large scale: the figure stands around one hundred and ten millimeters tall and the helmet reaches a size at which the viewer sees even the texture of the surface. At the same time the work goes more easily than in tiny scales, because the design can be placed precisely and corrected if need be. Large figures are also more often built as separate display pieces, with the viewer walking around the model, so the markings have to sit properly when seen from the side and from above as well.

Recommended procedure

• Paint the helmet and polish the area under the decal with gloss clear.
• Cut the design out close to the drawing and dip it in lukewarm water.
• A decal softener settles the film onto the spherical surface of the helmet.
• Once it is dry, go over it with matte clear and add the scratches and the dust.
