The real subject

The Volkswagen Type 2, nicknamed the T1 or Bulli, was built from 1950 and arose on the foundations of the Beetle: an air-cooled flat-four sat at the rear and the rear wheels were driven. The hallmark of the first generation is the split windshield and the large badge on the front panel. The vehicle was supplied as a van, a flatbed and a passenger microbus and became one of the most widespread utility vehicles of postwar Europe. It was precisely the corporate versions with advertising finishes that were among its most typical forms.

Building and painting tips

• A body with large areas forgives little, so it pays to clean up the seams carefully and sand the surface back.
• A glossy corporate finish comes out well once a base coat has been applied and the base polished.
• Mask the split windshield with tape cut into thin strips.
• Lay the decals onto a gloss base; a matte surface under them creates a silvery veil.
• Finish the interior before you close the body up.
